The ultimate first-year university checklist

The first year of university can be a daunting time with so much to think about and prepare for. From packing up your childhood belongings to ensuring you have the correct textbooks, there’s a lot of ground to cover before you even start classes. But don’t worry – we’re here to help! Check out our ultimate first-year university checklist for a stress-free start.

Bedroom essentials

Your new room will be the place you come to relax after a stressful day of university, so don’t skimp out on making it your home away from home. Top items to bring include a duvet, a quality linen set, pillows and a mattress protector. A mattress topper is nice for a bit of extra comfort, but it’s not a must.

Bathroom essentials

Whether you have the luxury of a private bathroom or are going communal, your bathroom checklist will fluctuate. In either case, be sure to pack two sets of towels, shower shoes, personal grooming products and a toiletry bag to easily transport your items if necessary.

Kitchen essentials

If you’re moving into a self-catering apartment, you’ll need to check with your university on any appliance restrictions. However, a few essentials to pack include cutlery, dishes and glassware for two people, at least one small frying pan and pot, dishtowels, chopping board, can opener, basic silicon cooking utensils, a quality chef’s knife, and a small set of Tupperware to store leftovers.

Studying essentials

Don’t forget about your study materials. While you can easily purchase basic stationery on campus and save packing space, don’t forget to include USB memory sticks, noise-cancelling headphones, a power bank and your laptop along with your notebooks and textbooks.

Important documents

Your loved ones may be able to help from time to time, but it’s best to keep important documents – or at least copies – with you. These include your passport, birth certificate, student registration documents and any insurance or healthcare-related paperwork.
